Indore Central Museum, originally established in 1923 by the Holkar province, began its journey as an educational institution known as the “Nararatna Mandir.” It was housed in a building on MG Street during the reign of Holkar King III. In the Tukoji Rao era, it was renamed the “Giantsika Gallery.” The primary mission of this institution is to gather portraits and information about notable individuals of distinction.

The idea to create a museum stemmed from the need to gather scattered artifacts and antiquities from across the state. Consequently, in 1929, a museum was established within the Naaratna Mandir. Because of its central location within the Holkar province, it was designated as a central museum. In 1965, the museum relocated to its current site. Over time, these museums featuring antiquities and artifacts have evolved significantly in accordance with modern museology principles and the evolving interests of the general public.

In 1975, the Devi Ahirya Mudra Museum was established, featuring a collection of coins and antiques. Alongside this, an old warehouse was repurposed to house excavated materials. However, the standout attraction has consistently been the stone artifacts. In 1977, a remarkable assortment of stone carvings unearthed from Hinglaj Garh in the Mandsaur district was added to the museum’s holdings, leading to the construction of a new structure called the Hinglaj Garh Art Gallery.
